Eigan Glover wrote “They Redefined Freedom” in response to the Supreme Court’s decision in Pearson v. Callahan, which strengthened qualified immunity. This is a direct weakening of the Fourth Amendment right against improper search and seizure, which protects citizens from an intrusive government. His article highlights an increasing permission by the general populace to give up their rights because police “have a difficult job.” In effect, he is saying that being told to give up your rights is being defined as freedom.
In spite of Eigan’s apprehension with news producers and news in general, he and Hanjoon maintained a friendship for years through Denae Washington, known as Denise on air, who was the featured anchor at the station in Sacramento where Hanjoon was the news director.
Hanjoon wanted to leave the news business the more he began to know Eigan, and the two eventually moved in together. Eigan was no longer writing news articles at this time, but Hanjoon dabbled occasionally.
When Shelby County (AL) v. Holder overturned key parts of the Voting Rights Act that did not require states to pass new voter laws through federal approval, he wrote “They Convinced You To Call It Freedom,” referencing Eigan’s earlier work and the erosion of key amendment rights… this time referring back to 1865 and pseudo-originalism standards to redefine the 15th Amendment right to vote. He connects Eigan’s article to a trend that questions every amendment, a dire prediction that has come true in the real world, and therefore in the narrative world.
